2012 DFW 3-Day

Friday’s 19.6-mile journey featured many memorable highlights as we walked through Richardson, Dallas and Farmers Branch. Along the route, children from several elementary schools showered us with cheers and signs of encouragement. We walked through busy streets and took shelter from the sunny day in a wooded and shaded trail before heading into camp where fellow participant Laura Hairston serenaded us with her original song, “Bigger Than Yourself.”

Saturday’s 22.8-mile walk started off with a beautiful sunrise. The community support on Saturday was wonderful. Walking from Forest Lane through Cromwell Drive in Dallas, there was a mile-long stretch of support starting with a wonderful public cheering station. Along the shaded neighborhoods, we got some relief from the sunny and warm temperatures on Saturday. The popsicles that some of the neighbors were passing out helped keep us cool. That evening at camp we were entertained by past walker Jean and her band Music for Fun.

Sunday’s 15.2-mile journey started with a fun bus ride to Ursuline Academy. The weather was much cooler than the previous days but we still got to enjoy lots of sunshine along the route. From there, we walked the beautiful streets of University Park and Highland Park. We walked through Uptown and into lunch at the Main Street Garden. It was the perfect backdrop of historic and contemporary Dallas. The cheering stations were full of proud family members and supportive strangers as we made our way to Fair Park in Dallas for a celebratory Closing Ceremony.
